EXPOSED on TheWB.com

I've been talking a lot about the new teaser for my upcoming sci-fi series CONTINUUM recently, but I wanted to remind folks that my other series EXPOSED is playing right now on TheWB.com.

Here's a pretty cool graphic I found too on TheWB's Facebook page...

Please check out the show if you haven't already:

  • For whatever reason some web series get uploaded at one time. This does not always make the perfect release schedule for all users. Some like a series to be released as a "series".

So what to do? Can you re-create the series feel even with something that has been fully uploaded?

Possibly. The key is often an RSS for a blog such as this one. Koldcast has actually been using this approach recently for one of their series to create a re-run effect and it actually does work. The key would be to have a weekly post about an episode with a link to where it can be watched.

Now the wider the readership of the blog where the story/link is posted the better this works.

Does this make sense? Well when a series gets uploaded "too fast" it can become overwhelming and the tendency for some is to just not watch. A web series is in general "snack TV" and hence something that some like to consume in small quantities. Other of course prefer the VOD effect of having all episodes available. The question then becomes how much of your market have you left on the table
with a VOD approach and can you recapture that market with this "series approach".

  • I agree with most of what you say. I have thought of the RSS idea too, but as you say, you need a big following for that to work - plus RSS really never caught on with the "main stream" per se. That's why I push the "Subscribe" idea really hard on YouTube, etc.. Of course, if you're not releasing new content regularly then again, this doesn't do much.

I personally like the idea of a release schedule of 2 or 3 at a time - or maybe per week - depending on how many episodes there are and the notoriety of the series. Then, when the run is over, they are all online for those that would rather watch them that way. And in some cases (with PINK) we even did "compilation episodes" with them playing back-to-back.

It's funny, on Hulu and TheWB I often read comments like, "hey, where are the EPISODES? These are just clips!". We (the new media/web series folks) live in our own world as most of the World doesn't know what a web series even is - so they see the short eps and don't think they're real eps. If they were all strung together at once, this problem would be remedied. But as mentioned earlier, I'd personally only do this after the eps had been released over time. With EXPOSED the studio released them in two chunks - I have not seen the metrics/results yet so I have no idea how the experiment worked.

With PINK we found that doing only one ep a week helped us build an audience. Of course that was back in 2007 when this industry was even newer (it's still new of course). Even with seasons 2 and 3 (in late 2008 and early 2009) we stuck with our one a week. Now, I'd likely do two a week - one on Tuesday and one on Thursday - but we're an established series and "brand" now (so to speak). With a NEW show, I'd definitely put 2 or 3 out at ONE time to get the audience to know the show and characters (hopefully), and then release two or so a week for the run. And of course then at the end have them available to play all together or on a DVD (like Bannen Way or Angel of Death - AND like PINK will be one day when our DVD comes out...).

Btw, we are working to (hopefully) get more PINK eps done one day too! :)

Who Am I?

I'm a filmmaker who's produced & directed five feature films including the comedy SPILT MILK (available on iTunes), the new horror/thriller PHOBIA (on iTunes) and the action/thiller KILLING DOWN (which you can buy or rent at pretty much all the usual places).

I also created the Streamy and Webby award-winning web series PINK, which to date has been viewed online around 10 MILLION times at places like YouTube, Hulu, Koldcast and TheWB.com. And speaking of TheWB.com, I also produced and directed an online thriller for them called EXPOSED. It was released summer 2010. And most recently I created a new online sci-fi series called CONTINUUM, which is part of the online indie TV network JTS.tv - Just The Story and NOW available via VOD through indie platform Distrify.

Oh, and I don't shoot weddings. Thanks for asking though.
